Prep basketball roundup: San Marin girls win on late free throw
Sophomore Delaney Butler hit a free throw with 8 seconds left on the clock to give San Marin a 39-38 victory over Freedom of Oakley during Friday’s second round of the Peyo Classic in Orinda.
The Mustangs led 9-0 in the second quarter, before surrendering the advantage in the third quarter and igniting a back-and-forth battle to the finish. Freedom hit a 3-pointer to tie the game late before Butler hit the game-winning free throw. Butler finished with five points for the Mustangs (3-2), who were led by Abby Bartholo’s 12 points. Eleanna Schram added 11 points and seven steals.
The Mustangs are scheduled to play Heritage in the consolation championship game at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
San Marin dueled Northgate to the bitter end on Thursday before falling, 51-49, at the opener of the Peyo Classic. Bartholo led the Mustangs with 16 points, including three from beyond the arc. Schram had 12 points for the Mustangs, while Quincy Dean posted 10 points and 11 rebounds.
- Senior Avery Myerberg hit six 3-pointers en route to a 26-point night as The Branson School beat Novato 41-21 in Friday’s semifinals of the Lady Mustang Classic, hosted by St. Vincent of Petaluma. Senior Paige Macy came through with 17 rebounds and six points for the Bulls (3-0). Branson will face host St. Vincent in Saturday’s championship at 6:30 p.m. St. Vincent was a 39-14 semifinal winner over Victory Christian, which will play Novato in the third-place game..
- Terra Linda trailed by eight points at halftime, then was held to just two points in the third quarter during a 44-29 loss to host Galileo on Friday. The Trojans (1-3) are scheduled to return to action Wednesday at Las Lomas.
- Junior Jessica Vara had 18 points to lead San Rafael to a 47-11 win over Redwood Christian in tournament action on Friday night in the Marin Academy Hoops vs Cancer Classic. Aly Seater chipped in with eight points for the Bulldogs (2-4). Jennifer Armas and Brisa Briseno added five points and four points, respectively.
- In other games at the MA tournament Friday, the host Wildcats lost 36-33 in overtime against Sonoma Academy in a consolation round game. Marin Academy will face Redwood Christian in the seventh-place game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Tam lost 50-38 to St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo in a semifinal matchup, and will face Liberty in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
- Redwood fell 57-30 to a ball hawking Acalanes squad in Friday’s second round of the LadyCat Classic at Marin Catholic. The Dons led by 30 in the third quarter and the Giants (3-2) could not recover.
- Host Marin Catholic fell behind early and lost to St. Ignatius, 69-53, in Friday’s other semifinal of the LadyCat Classic. The Wildcats are scheduled to play MCAL rival Redwood in the third-place game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
- Izzy McFadden paced Marin Catholic with 20 points as the host Wildcats won their LadyCat Classic opener 50-37 against Mission Prep on Thursday. Sienna Frazier added nine points for MC (2-0).
Boys basketball
Jake Ryan scored 16 points to lead Marin Catholic to.a 52-48 semifinal win overNorth of Bakersfield on Friday, and send the Wildcats to the championship game of the Montgomery Classic in Santa Rosa. The Wildcats (2-1) will play either Campolindo or host Montgomery in Saturday’s final at 3:30 p.m.
Joe Hammond pulled in 15 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals for Marin Catholic, while Oliver Myers and Bentley Morrow added nine points each. Matthew Tamer came off the bench to contribute seven rebounds and Dom Hammond had three steals.
- Terra Linda beat College Prep, 58-38, Thursday at the Redwood Christian Tournament to stretch the Trojans’ record to 3-0. In other first-round action, Marin Academy advanced past Berean Christian, 69-46. The Trojans beat host Redwood Christian, 80-62, in Friday’s semifinals.
- Dante Stallone had 17 points and Brian Wright added 16 as Archie Williams picked up a 63-38 win over host Shasta in the first round of the Harlan Carter Classic on Thursday night. Ephraim Sohn filled up the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
