It is the second-largest religion after Christianity and has a significant presence across the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Muslims form diverse communities, with the largest populations found in countries like Indonesia and India. Usually, Muslims primarily reside in countries across the Arab world, Africa, and South Asia. Indonesia has the largest Muslim population by country, followed by India. However, there are several countries where the Muslim population is close to zero, and in some of these nations, Islam is effectively banned.

One such country is North Korea, which is often in the news due to its dictator, Kim Jong-un. It sees the United States and Western powers as its greatest enemies. Despite having a population of only 2.6 crore, North Korea is regarded as a significant military force on the global stage.

As per the News18 Hindi report, North Korea is an atheist country, allowing its citizens the freedom to practice any religion. However, this freedom comes with the condition that religious beliefs must not disrupt the country, society, or its social order. The majority of the population follows Korean shamanism and Chongryonism, the country’s traditional ideologies, which are actively promoted by Kim Jong-un’s government. A small portion of the population also follows Buddhism and Christianity.

Korean Shamanism is an ancient religious tradition that has been practiced in Korea for thousands of years. Meanwhile, Chongryonism is reportedly based on the ideas and principles of Chongryon, the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, which represents North Korean expatriates in Japan.

North Korea, under the rule of Kim Jong-un, strictly prohibits the practice of foreign religions, particularly Islam. While the country is officially atheist, the law stipulates that religious practices must not disrupt social harmony or pose a threat to national security.

According to media reports, there are currently only about 3,000 Muslims in North Korea. They do not have any mosques for worship. The only mosque is located within the Iranian Embassy complex in the capital city of Pyongyang, and it is primarily for Iranians residing at the embassy. North Korea and Iran share a strong diplomatic relationship.

North Korea claims to be a communist country, where religion is not recognized under the principles of communism. In reality, it functions as a dictatorship disguised as communism. The country is entirely cut off from the outside world, and personal freedoms are almost nonexistent. Citizens cannot act freely, and even what they view on their mobile phones is controlled by the government. In this environment, practicing any religion, including Islam, is virtually prohibited. Anyone who opposes the dictator or defies orders often faces the death penalty.
