New Rochelle transforms transit center

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A lot of activity goes on around train stations.

It’s not only about commuting. Transit is a connection.

New Rochelle in Westchester County wants to be the next place you visit. They're transforming the transit center and creating a downtown district.

"It’s like a mini–New York City. It has changed a lot. I think it's great," said Ralph, who was back in town during the holiday.

The transit center has buses, the Metro-North Railroad and Amtrak. A coffee shop is open in the station and new plans have been released for the historic structure.

New Rochelle Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert calls it a cornerstone and welcomes you to New Rochelle.

"Have a little green space, have a quality of life, and be in Manhattan in 35 minutes. This is a destination to build a community," she said.

The transit center will be restored with some original details such as a higher ceiling and windows. They’re still looking for some grant money but plan to move ahead with some of the initial work, including evening activities.

The Holiday Market runs through Dec. 22 at the New Rochelle Transit Center. The expanded activities include music, ice skating and food trucks along with 60 local vendors.

It's open weekdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and weekends it opens at noon.

Stacy Thomas is the owner of I Design Beauty. Her shop relies on e-commerce and the markets.

"It's a great energy and chance to speak with other local businesses," she said.

New businesses, apartments and restaurants have moved to the downtown district, which is walking distance from the train.
