Menu, prices: Morton’s The Steakhouse now grilling in Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — Hailing from Chicago, high-end US steakhouse chain Morton’s makes its Philippine debut at Uptown East Gate, Bonifacio Global City!

Morton’s The Steakhouse opened its first Metro Manila branch on December 1, in partnership with The Bistro Group. The globally-renowned name was founded in 1978 in Chicago when Klaus Fritsch cooked a hamburger for co-founder Arnie Morton to try. It has since expanded to over 60 locations worldwide.

Morton’s tagline — “the best steak anywhere” — comes from its line of signature USDA Prime Steaks, which represent the top 2% of beef produced in the United States. These are expertly aged, hand-cut steaks famous for their marbling, tenderness, and deep flavor.

Morton’s Philippine branch is revered as the “sexiest one yet” of all, Morton’s management said during the media launch last November 28. The brand’s understated, fine-dining elegance features interiors that are luxurious yet warm and inviting, with subdued lighting, lava rock accents, and deep oxblood hues setting the tone.

Inspired by the elements of coal, fire, and heat, the space was designed to evoke a classic, almost retro steakhouse ambiance, but with added sophistication.

The restaurant can seat 200 diners — at the more well-lit dining space below or at the more intimate, private booth seating above. It includes two private rooms for functions, accommodating 6 and 12 guests, respectively.

The steakhouse experience: First impressions

It’s not labeled “high-end” without reason — the prices reflect a dining experience reserved for special occasions and for those willing to splurge.

During the launch, we were served the Caesar Salad (P690) — a classic done right — featuring crisp greens and crunchy croutons dressed in the distinctly tangy-salty caesar dressing. But the surprise standout was the freshly-baked warm loaf of Onion Bread that welcomed us: a complimentary starter that boasted a crisp exterior crust and a light and fluffy interior, with a subtle but addictive taste of French onion embedded within. It’s best taken with the butter served.

For seafood lovers, Morton’s has a Baked and Chilled Ocean Platter, priced at P8,925 (Grand Size, serves 3 to 4) and P13,585 (Epic Size, serves 5 to 6) — a selection of lobster tail, jumbo shrimp cocktail, crab cocktail, and oysters on the half shell.

The Filet Mignon, priced between P3,450 and P5,980 depending on the weight, is a tender, lean piece of meat with a milder flavor, as compared to the Ribeye (16 oz for P6,900) which is bolder in flavor due to the rich marbling, more fat, and the juices seeping out. Served medium-rare, the ribeye was well-seasoned (I didn’t have to ask for sauce) and tender enough to slice and chew with ease.

No steak dinner is complete without sides, and here, they are able to shine on their own. The Garlic Rice (P395), hyped by the staff as a must-try, is flavorful in buttery richness and seasoning. The Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes (P325 for regular, P525 for large) is a fluffy and whipped dream; creamy yet light.

Morton’s has over 300 wine selections sourced from across the globe; Morton’s sommeliers are available to recommend the best pairing for your steak or seafood in a glass or a full bottle.

You can choose to add “enhancements” to your steaks, like three Jumbo Grilled Shrimp (P705); Oscar Style (P705) topped with crab meat, asparagus, and Béarnaise sauce; two Bacon Wrapped Sea Scallops (P1,195); and Lobster Tail (P1,895).

For additional butter and sauces at P225 each, there’s Cognac Sauce Au Poivre, Black Truffle Butter, Béarnaise Sauce, Garlic Butter, Whipped Horseradish, and Blue Cheese Butter.

We did not get to try the famous Morton’s Hot Chocolate Cake, but we were able to enjoy the lighter Crème Brûlée; a silky, creamy vanilla custard topped with a thin layer of caramelized sugar and fresh raspberries.

Morton’s The Steakhouse is The Bistro Group’s latest international addition to its restaurant roster, which includes Denny’s, TGIFridays, Italianni’s, Texas Roadhouse, Randy’s Donuts, and more.

Morton’s BGC location is its second branch in Southeast Asia, after Singapore. It can also be found in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Tokyo.
