MAGA Republican backs conspiracy theorizing ex-agent and streamer to head Secret Service

0

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) enthusiastically endorsed far-right conspiracy theorist Dan Bongino to run the Secret Service during an interview on The Benny Show on Friday.

"I think Dan would be great," Jordan told right-wing host Benny Johnson. "Dan Bongino at Secret Service would be with us on the change that needs to take place to focus on the mission of that critical agency."

Bongino, who himself previously served as a Secret Service agent, is a longtime GOP influencer who was banned from YouTube and Google for promoting conspiracy theories about COVID-19, as well as a paranoid fantasy known as "The Great Reset," where a world order of socialists plans to wipe out 90 percent of the population by the year 2030. He happens to own a financial stake in Rumble, a right-wing video platform that positions itself as an alternative to YouTube.

Additionally, Bongino has a history of disorderly behavior, including an incident that forced his removal from a restaurant in Palm Beach, Florida, last year.

All of this comes at a time when Republicans are furious with the Secret Service for missteps in handling presidential security, the most prominent incident being the near assassination of now President-elect Donald Trump as he held a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, earlier this year.

In that incident, a young man from a conservative family with unclear motives managed to position himself on the roof of a nearby warehouse and opened fire on Trump and the crowd with a semiautomatic rifle before being neutralized by the Secret Service. The shooting prompted a flurry of investigations into the security agency's practices, and the resignation of its director.
