NYC building without heat, water, electricity amid freezing temps

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) -- As temperatures dip, residents of an apartment building in Far Rockaway say they are dealing with a trifecta of issues: no heat, hot water or electricity.

The building is on Collier Avenue near Beach 22nd Street. The residents said the heat, hot water and electricity went out around 1 p.m. Thursday.

The residents are frustrated, saying it’s been more than 24 hours and they have heard nothing from building management.

“I feel hurt, let down,” said Ingrid, who has lived in the building since 1982. “There’s seniors living in this building. No one is doing well checks. The hallways are pitch black and it’s not summer outside.”

Ingrid said the last 24 hours have been excruciating.

“Yesterday I had food delivered by Amazon. Now everything in the freezer is spoiling. I know I’m on a fixed income. Who’s going to replace my food?" Ingrid said.

And she’s not the only one angry and upset.

"I feel terrible. Just have to bundle up. We’re in the apartment with our coats on, long johns, double sweaters. I have to protect myself because I have health issues," said 73-year-old Thelma Phillips.

Phillips has lived in the building for 18 years. Her two grandchildren are currently staying with her.

“They’re so scared. He’s hearing things cause it’s dark. He wants something to eat. No heat, no hot water, and I’m scared to turn on the stove because I don’t know if it’s a problem with the gas. You don’t know what to do," Phillips said.

On Friday, PSEG Long Island crews were on the scene investigating the cause of the power failure.

Officials said the source of the failure of equipment belongs to the building owner and the building’s super and owner have been informed.

When PIX11 News asked the super for information, he directed the questions to building management. The tenants said they have also tried to call and have heard nothing.

"I feel the management has disrespected us by not coming around and gathering everyone and let them know what’s going on," Phillips said.

Ingrid added, "You didn’t even have the decency to send someone here to check on us and let us know what’s going on.”

PIX11 News has reached out to the building’s management for information.

Meanwhile, the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development told PIX11 News it is looking into the complaints.
