How many centenarians live in Kansas?
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Living to see your 100th birthday is not a common feat, and the same can be said for the few Kansans who have achieved this impressive milestone.
KSNT 27 News consulted the most recent statistics taken by the Census Bureau (USCB) during the 2020 census to learn how many centenarians, or those who have reached 100-years-old or older, call the Sunflower State home. Data for Kansas shows that 819 centenarians live in the state, making up just below 0.03% of the total population.
The majority of centenarians can be found near larger population centers such as the Kansas City metro area, Topeka, Wichita and Lawrence. Counties with the most centenarians can be found below:
- Johnson - 125
- Sedgwick - 114
- Wyandotte - 33
- Shawnee - 33
- Douglas - 25
- McPherson - 19
- Osage - 19
- Butler - 17

Kansas ranks 14 out of 50 when compared to other states in the U.S. when considering how many centenarians it has out of its total population of more than 2,900,000 residents. The number of centenarians also increased from the 2010 census, which recorded 626 living in Kansas, at a rate of a little more than 30%.
The USCB reported there were 80,139 centenarians overall in its 2020 census. This marked a more than 50% increase in the number of centenarians as recorded in the 2010 census. The majority of those counted in 2020 were women at 63,162 compared to only 16,977 men.
