Gran Canaria Golf Tour 16-26 November 2024
We have made several visits to Maspolamas and the Lopesan Resorts on the southern side of Gran Canaria. Following the 2023 golf week, the general consensus of the group was to return this year for 10 days. Personally, I have felt for a long time, 10 days is a perfect length for a golfing break at a well loved resort, especially if travelling an hour or two further than the Iberian Peninsula. A day to relax after travel, 6 rounds, punctuated by days off following 2 rounds strikes a very happy balance I believe.
The Lopesan hotel is so well situated in the town. Set well back from the main road in a central location on the entrance side, and a walk through the grounds leads to the promenade at the rear. It is surrounded by many good restaurants that makes for easy walking out in the evening for good dining.
Once again we played 3 different courses, each of which offers a quite different test and setting. Above all, each course was in excellent condition throughout, and while the putting may be testing, the greens surfaces were perfect.
Maspalomas golf is flat, walkable and partly links, playing along the dunes in the early part of course. Maybe not as interesting or scenic as the other two, but a real test if the wind gets up.
Anfi Touro, set back a little in the hills, is almost unique in its desert design. A buggy is essential, the views wonderful, and a joy to play twice, even if the greenskeeper who cut the holes for our second round was either still drunk from the night before, or had had a huge row with his wife before work that morning!
A round at Melonares just 5 minutes from our hotel earlier in the week and for the final two rounds completed a most enjoyable week. The front nine plays a little inland before ocean views abound throughout the back nine and from the clubhouse terrace.
The 16 participants this week played a mixture of team events in great spirit and we concluded with a main event of a mixed 4bbb. Two excellent 43 points lead the way with Pam & Tony winning by the tightest margin from Ronnie & Alan, 22 to 21 points on the back nine!
This was my final hosted tour to Gran Canaria, but it won’t be my last visit, and I can highly recommend following Barney here next November.
