Ryan Day reflects on Michigan loss, says 'without question' Ohio State ran too much

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Coach Ryan Day reflected on Ohio State's 13-10 loss Saturday to rivals Michigan and said the gameplan could have used adjustments.

After discussing the 2025 recruiting class Wednesday, Day went into detail about the lack of offensive adjustments during the Buckeyes' fourth consecutive loss to the Wolverines. He said "without question" they ran the ball too much on the inside, with the team gaining just 77 rushing yards on 26 attempts.

"It was not a good day. Some of that had to do with the coaching. There's no question we could have done a better job getting the ball to the perimeter," Day said.

He emphasized a "key point" to the game being just a 10-point yield out of five red-zone trips. The Buckeyes scored one touchdown and had a field goal to go along with a Will Howard interception and two missed attempts by Jayden Fielding.

"Ultimately, that comes back on me as the head coach," Day said. "Whether it's the right guys being in the right spots, the recruiting part of it, the scheme, the coaching, that's on me."

The loss opened up debate on Day's future and when asked plainly if he expects to be back next season, the response was a simple "yes."

The focus shifts to the College Football Playoff as the Buckeyes look set to play a first-round game on Dec. 20 or 21 at Ohio Stadium.

Day said he believes the team can rebuild its momentum for the postseason. He compared the new 12-team format to the NFL postseason where teams that don't earn byes have often won Super Bowls. The loss to Michigan is still stinging, but the team, particularly the seniors, have a chance to play again at Ohio Stadium.

"To know that there season isn't over and that the last time they played with each other isn't over and that they can still achieve the goal of winning a national championship certainly is right there," Day said. "Every day, they are getting more and more excited about that."

Based off Tuesday's playoff rankings, Ohio State is slated to take the No. 8 seed and play Tennessee in the first round. The Buckeyes' only chance of movement in the poll is up if they see Penn State or Georgia fall in their respective conference title games.

The 12-team bracket will be announced Sunday.
