Jude Law Explains Strange Design Choice Behind 'Star Wars' Costumes

0

For nearly 50 years, Star Wars fans have examined every detail of the various films in the franchise as well as recent Disney+ spin-offs like The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Though original director George Lucas is no longer in charge of creating Star Wars content, the handlers of his legacy are adamant about staying in line with his original vision in every new venture.

On Dec. 3, Skeleton Crew star Jude Law stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about the show and what the experience has been like joining the world of Star Wars. As the only actor to hold the distinct achievement of being a part of the Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel universes, Law has seen firsthand just how important it is to prioritize the historical integrity of these franchises on set.

When asked about who on Skeleton Crew was charged with ensuring continuity with the original Star Wars films, Law explained that it's the job of "several folks." "They are gatekeepers for the world of Star Wars, the lore, the rules."

"They oversee costumes and fittings and suggestions that I may have on a prop," he continued. "For example, with the costumes, no buttons. You never see any buttons in Star Wars. Everything is either tied, velcroed, or buckled, but no buttons."

"It's just a rule," he stated plainly.

George Lucas sold his Lucasfilm company to Disney in 2012 for more than $4 billion, leaving the iconic sci-fi franchise in the entertainment conglomerate's hands. And while Disney has purportedly had creative freedom to reinvent the IP, adhering to every detail of the world Lucas birthed is paramount.

"A lot of the shots that they use are... inspired by—and they don't want to break these rules—how Lucas shot the original," Law said. "[In] some sci-fi films they'll pass through glass or they'll whiz around in space. They don't do that because they still want the language of the cinematography to be similar to the rest of the canon."
