Trial of uncle charged in death of 19-month old Kaci Cyprian rescheduled
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The trial for the man accused of killing 19-month-old Kaci Cyprian, scheduled to begin Monday, has been postponed.
John Nicholas was set to begin trial in the 15th Judicial District Court for the shooting on South General Marshall Street in August 2023. He faces several charges including one count of second degree murder for the death of Cyprian, his niece.
The trial was moved to March 24, 2025, at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Kristian Earles.
He was originally charged with first-degree murder but was indicted in November of 2023 for the present charge. He is also charged with five counts of attempted first degree murder, and one count each of possession of firearm by convicted felon, domestic abuse battery (child present), battery of a dating partner (child endangerment) and false imprisonment armed with a dangerous weapon.
The trial was postponed because no lawyer was present to represent Nicholas.
Court records showed Bobby Domengeaux as Nicholas's attorney of record, but News 10 learned he filed a motion in October to get a substitute with the public defender’s office because of an unspecified conflict, which was granted.
Attempts to reach the public defender’s office to see if anyone was selected to represent Nicholas were unsuccessful.
