16y/o pictured in travelling Man Utd squad for Arsenal game - report

Manchester United academy defender Godwill Kukonki is in the travelling squad for the Premier League game against Arsenal on Wednesday, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 16-year-old trained with the Red Devils first-team for the first time during Ruben Amorim’s first training session, and he travelled with the team to Ipswich Town.

While he was not included in the matchday squad, Kukonki has been a regular face at training sessions since then.

Some people at the club believe the teenage sensation could go on to make history by becoming the first defender to play for the Red Devils in the Premier League before turning 18.

Amorim and his coaching staff have loved what they have seen from Kukonki, and they have had him working with the first team since then.

They excluded him from the Under-19s that travelled to the Netherlands for the first leg of a UEFA Youth League qualifier against AZ Alkmaar last week.

Kukonki only signed a scholarship deal in the summer but is slowly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with on the training pitch.

While he is primarily a centre-back, Kukonki can also play at left-back, and Amorim will be looking to get the best out of him.

Having handed official first-team debuts to 27 players from the Sporting CP academy during his time as their manager, Amorim will not hesitate to hand Kukonki a debut if he deserves it.
