Gridlock Alert Day: Avoid driving in Manhattan, DOT says

NEW YORK (PIX11) – You may want to avoid driving in Manhattan on Tuesday.

It's a Gridlock Alert Day, expected to be one of the busiest traffic days of the year, according to the New York City Department of Transportation.

The DOT encourages commuters to take the subway, bus, walk or ride a bike to avoid being stuck in traffic.

• Friday, Dec. 6

• Wednesday, Dec. 11

• Wednesday, Dec. 18
• Thursday, Dec. 19

There are also street closures planned for the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which will be held on Dec. 4, but roads could also shut down on Tuesday.

Many streets in Manhattan were shut down back in September for the United Nations General Assembly. The average driving speed drops to less than four miles per hour during the general assembly, according to city data.
