GM recalls over 130,000 trucks over unexpected tailgate unlatching

0

(WJET/WFXP) — Over 132,000 Chevrolet and GMC trucks are facing a recall over concerns that the tailgate may unlatch unexpectedly.

The recall affects certain 2024 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty (2500/3500 series) and GMC Sierra Heavy Duty (2500/3500 series). The recall only affects models equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The affected trucks — 132,037 in total — were built between Aug. 1, 2023, and March 8, 2024.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), under certain conditions, water could seep into the tailgates and come into contact with the electronic gate-release switch. This could cause a short circuit, leading to the tailgate unlatching while the truck is in park, resulting in the loss of cargo and increasing the chance of an accident.

GM received 237 complaints between Sept. 22, 2023, and Sept. 3, 2024, alleging a tailgate opening while driving.

"These complaints are likely attributable to the tailgate releasing while in Park before beginning a drive, as the control logic in the body control module (BCM) would prevent release of the tailgate latch when the vehicle is in gear—even if the BCM receives a release signal from the exterior touchpad switch," the NHTSA said in a release.

So far, no crashes or injuries have been reported.

Until the recall is repaired, owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.

Dealerships will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies for free. Letters notifying owners of the recall are expected to be mailed on Jan. 13. Owners can also contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
