Trooper who shot, killed Hillsdale man set to retire

0

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- New York State Police have announced the off-duty officer who shot and killed a Hillsdale man in September will retire on Tuesday. Trooper Brian Rudolph chose to retire after 23 years of service for personal reasons, according to State Police.

In September, Troopers were attempting to locate Dellea after he threatened self-harm and found him in the parking lot of the Albany Saratoga Speedway on Route 9 in Malta. After a slow-paced pursuit, Troopers said Dellea refused to get out of his vehicle, brandishing a gun in the Bethel Saratoga parking lot before Trooper Rudolph fired his weapon.

On Saturday, November 30, the family of James Dellea held a candlelight vigil in honor of the 48-year-old. Family members told NEWS10 they're fighting for more mental health resources and the importance of Daniel's Law.
