Russian and Arab media have reported that Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, was killed in Russian airstrikes in the city of Idlib, Syria.

Russia Today (RT Arabic) reported that Russian fighter jets bombed positions of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib on Saturday night, November 30. The airstrikes came after the Syrian army’s strategic retreat from Aleppo, targeting several positions of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, including their central command center and a meeting of the group’s senior commanders in Idlib.

RT Arabic further reported that the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham was attending the senior commanders’ meeting in Idlib at the time of the bombing and was killed during the airstrike on the command center.

Arab media outlets, including Al-Nujba (a media outlet affiliated with Hezbollah) and Al-Mayadeen, confirmed through their sources that Abu Mohammad al-Julani was present at the commanders’ meeting in Idlib during the bombing.

Abu Mohammad al-Julani, 44, organized some of the most complex attacks by his group against the Syrian government under President Bashar al-Assad, and was instrumental in the capture of Aleppo, a key city in northern Syria, through coordination with several other groups.

The ongoing conflict in Syria continues to see significant developments, with key figures such as Abu Mohammad al-Julani becoming targets of intense military operations.

The death of al-Julani will have substantial implications for Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the broader rebel movement in Syria, affecting the balance of power in the region.

The conflict, now in its third decade, remains a focal point for international and regional actors, with no clear resolution in sight.
