'Catastrophic error': Expert from Trump's first term issues dire warning about new plan

Elon Musk’s cash-slashing new venture is tempting catastrophe by putting one particular government agency in its crosshairs, an expert who served in Donald Trump’s first administration warned Sunday.

Ryan Maue, who worked at Trump’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote his dire warning in the New York Times.

He claimed Musk and his sidekick in the Department of Government Efficiency, Vivek Ramaswamy, were threatening to dismantle the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in their effort to slash spending in the federal budget.

And, he wrote, letting them do that would be disastrous for the U.S. and for the world.

“With the rising costs of and vulnerability to extreme weather in a changing climate for the United States, dismantling or defunding NOAA would be a catastrophic error,” he wrote.

He added, “For people who care about weather and climate, one of the most concerning proposals on the table is to dismantle NOAA”

The proposal is included in Project 2025, who’s authors “claim erroneously that NOAA is ‘one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry’ and should be ‘broken down and downsized.’” wrote Maue.

“Using satellites, balloon launches, ships, aircraft and weather stations, NOAA and its offices around the country provide vital services like clockwork, free of charge — services that cannot be adequately replaced by the private sector in part because they wouldn’t necessarily be profitable.”

Slashing it would, he wrote, leave Americans at the mercy of weather that’s fast becoming more extreme and deadly.

“And because the military relies on NOAA’s infrastructure, the risks of and damage from extreme weather and climate events are a national security concern as much as an economic one,” he added.
