Syrian opposition forces free dozens of prisoners after entering city of Aleppo

Opposition armed groups in Syria have announced that they have taken control of several government buildings in Aleppo, including the police headquarters and the city’s governorate office.

They also reported capturing a Syrian army security prison in Aleppo, freeing around 100 prisoners.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Friday that fighters from the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham entered Aleppo without facing resistance from President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.

Al-Arabiya also stated that these armed groups now control 65 towns and villages in the Aleppo and Idlib regions. The commander of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham had earlier assured Syrian civilians that they would not be harmed during the fighting

Reports indicate that several Assad forces have retreated from neighborhoods in Aleppo without engaging in combat. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights noted clashes between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the Syrian army, with signs of weakening support for Assad’s forces in western Aleppo.

The rapid advance of opposition forces in Aleppo marks a significant shift in the Syrian conflict, with major urban areas falling into their hands. The control of key government buildings and military facilities signals a serious challenge to the Assad regime.

While opposition leaders have assured civilians of their safety, the escalating violence and airstrikes in surrounding areas suggest growing dangers for the local population. The loss of major urban centers like Aleppo further deepens the humanitarian crisis.

The Syrian government, with support from Russian airstrikes, has vowed to continue fighting opposition forces in the region. However, as more areas fall to rebels, the international community faces increasing pressure to address the ongoing conflict and its humanitarian consequences.
