Georgetown lights historic square for holidays, drawing visitors to businesses

GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) — Thousands flooded into the historic Georgetown Square Friday evening to witness the annual Lighting of the Square.

There was plenty to get people into the festive spirit – including local dining, live performances, abundant decorations and shopping. Local shops were also appreciative of the higher-than-usual traffic into their stores.

“We love the community of Georgetown, and we love being here,” said Christy Carney, the owner of two clothing stores on the square – Blushing Belle Boutique and The Lookout.

The frequent events that inundate people to the square were a driving factor bringing Carney and her businesses to the Georgetown Square, she said.

“I knew how much the town really strives to support small business,” Carney said. “The downtown associations – there's multiple –  they do such a great job of drawing people in. It's a great community to be a part of.”

The lighting event started Black Friday evening, but the city said the lights around the square would stay shining until the New Year.
