Canby man suffers 'medical event' prior to car crash in Salem, dies
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man had a "medical event" prior to being involved in a car crash in Salem and later died at the hospital, authorities said.
Canby resident Brett Dhone, 37, died after a crash Friday morning near Martin Luther King Jr Parkway, the Salem Police Department said in a release.
Officers, along with other emergency personnel, responded at about 7:30 a.m. on reports of a crash.
When police arrived, they spoke to witnesses who said a driver of a pickup truck traveling south "slowly drove off the roadway after passing through the intersection at Broadway ST NE."
"The truck struck a tree and traveled back onto the roadway where the vehicle stopped," Salem police said. "Passersby attempted to provide medical aid to the unresponsive driver before the arrival of paramedics."
Dhone was taken to Salem Health and later died, officials said.
"The Traffic Team’s preliminary investigation indicates Dhone suffered a medical event prior to the collision," police said.
A section of Martin Luther King Jr Parkway was closed for two hours while the investigation took place, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing.
