Part of I-90 closed due to snowstorm | Travel restrictions, parking bans & more
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Part of I-90 is closed and multiple municipalities have implemented travel restrictions and overnight parking bans during the winter storm this weekend that is expected to drop several feet of snow on the hardest-hit areas.
I-90 is closed from Exit 57 (Hamburg) all the way to the Pennsylvania state line, a stretch of roughly 60 miles.
Meanwhile, the Thruway Authority also advised drivers to avoid travel on the I-90 west of Lackawanna. A ban on tandem trucks and empty commercial vehicles is in effect on I-90 beginning at Exit 53 (Downtown Buffalo).
Additionally, a travel advisory has been issued for several municipalities in Southern Erie County, including West Seneca, Hamburg, Orchard Park, Lackawanna and more. The City of Buffalo and regions north are not under an advisory.
See the parking ban updates below:
- Town of Cheektowaga: The town has implemented its overnight parking ban (between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. beginning early Saturday). The ban will last until April 1, 2025.
- Town of Tonawanda: The town's ban on overnight parking (between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.) will begin at 2 a.m. on Sunday. The ban goes until March 15, 2025.
This weekend's storm is the first major lake effect storm of the season. It is possible that some areas, especially in the areas of southern Erie County as well as Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties, will see multiple feet of snow. A Lake Effect Snow Warning began in those areas at 7 a.m. Friday and lasts until 7 a.m. Monday.
No changes have been announced for Sunday night's Buffalo Bills game against the San Francisco 49ers. While more than a foot of snow is expected near the stadium in Orchard Park prior to the game, snow could stop falling by kickoff.
