Champions Trophy 2025: Before India, these teams have refused to play ICC tournaments in other countries, BIG names include in the list
New Delhi: The Champions Trophy is to be held next year, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) has not yet announced the schedule of this tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already refused to send the Indian team on a tour of Pakistan. At the same time, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has also not yet agreed to the hybrid model. Amidst this deadlock, the ICC has called a meeting of all the boards on Friday, in which the schedule and venue of the Champions Trophy are to be discussed. This is not the first time that a country has refused to play an ICC tournament in another country. Earlier, many teams including Australia, New Zealand, England and West Indies have done so. Let us know when this has happened before.
West Indies and Australia refused to play:
The 1996 World Cup was hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In this, Sri Lanka had to host four group-stage matches against Australia, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Kenya. But just 14 days before the tournament, a bomb blast in Colombo took the lives of more than 90 people. At the same time, more than 1400 people were injured. After this incident, West Indies and Australia refused to play the match in Sri Lanka citing the safety of the players. Apart from this, both the countries also demanded full points for the match.
England and New Zealand have also taken shocking decisions:
The 2003 World Cup was hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. This time England refused to play in Harare, Zimbabwe. In such a situation, Sri Lanka had to suffer losses. ICC had given full points to Zimbabwe without any debate. In the same tournament, apart from England, New Zealand also refused to play in Nairobi, Kenya. They refused citing security reasons. ICC gave the points of this match to Kenya.
West Indies had refused:
In 1982, West Indies refused to tour New Zealand in the Women’s World Cup. The team withdrew its name from the entire tournament. The reason behind this was the issue of apartheid. Actually, in 1981, New Zealand had invited the South African rugby team. At that time, there was a struggle against apartheid in South Africa. West Indies did not like inviting South Africa to play here and they refused to send their team to New Zealand in the Women’s World Cup. Zimbabwe withdrew its name
The 2009 T20 World Cup was hosted by England. Zimbabwe withdrew from the tournament accusing the England government of not granting visas. Apart from this, New Zealand withdrew its name during the Under-19 World Cup hosted by the West Indies in 2022, refusing to play. The board cited the rules applicable for the Corona epidemic as the reason behind this.
