People in Central Alberta, Canada, witnessed a unique natural phenomenon when light pillars appeared to fall from the sky on a cold night with temperatures of -30°C

Anyone could misunderstand it as a supernatural phenomenon, but the delicate vertical beams of light are a natural optical illusion that occurs under extremely cold conditions. 

The formation of light pillars occurs when tiny ice crystals are dispersed in the atmosphere, acting like millions of tiny mirrors that reflect light sources. These plate-shaped crystals create a vertical column of light, giving the illusion that light is rising from ground-based sources into the sky.

There are standard conditions for the formation of light pillars as it happens when the temperature falls between -10 to -40 °C, high humidity and virtually no wind. 

This order sets hexagonal ice crystals to fall horizontally and shapes it in a synchronised manner which resembles it into light pillars. 

In this phenomenon, light can be different like streetlights, illumination in the city and natural sources like the moon. The colour depends on the colour of the light source and it makes a delight for the people by making colourful light pillars. 

This fascinating phenomenon provides an extraordinary experience that is often referenced in UFO reports due to its unique nature.

On the other hand, meteorologists have termed it an optical illusion. They explain that light pillars are not physically present above the light source, but rather form due to the collective reflection of light through tiny ice crystals dispersed in the atmosphere.
