Beloved BBC cartoonist behind Penny Crayon & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dies ‘suddenly’ aged 96 as son pays tribute

A BELOVED TV cartoonist known for hit BBC children’s cartoons has died aged 96.

Peter Maddocks was one of the “most prolific and respected” Fleet Street cartoonists of the 20th century.

The news was announced in a post by the cartoonist’s son on Facebook.

It confirmed Peter’s death in hospital in Spain on 20 November following a short illness.

The tribute read: “My Dad, the late, great Peter Maddocks passed away peacefully last Wednesday in hospital in Spain after a very short and sudden decline aged 96.

“He was one of the most prolific and respected Fleet Street cartoonists of the twentieth century.”

Peter’s son, Guy, laid praise to his father’s cartoons for papers including The Daily Mail, The Evening Standard, and The Times.

Other outlets treated to Peter’s sketches included Private Eye, The Daily Mirror, and The Daily Sketch.

Guy added: “Even later in life after retiring to Spain, until his early 90’s he drew a pocket cartoon for SUR.

“Political satire was his true love and an area in which he excelled.

“A loving husband and a wonderful father.

“A true Fleet Street legend gone but not forgotten.”

The cartoonist was best known for being behind Penny Crayon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Peter Maddocks was best known for his BBC cartoon work
