'Extraordinarily large cohort' of House members targeting new offices in 2026: report
An "extraordinarily large cohort" of House members could make bids for other offices in 2026, leaving Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in a potential lurch, according to a new report.
Among the lawmakers eyeing new positions, Axios reported Wednesday: Reps. Tim Burchett (R-TN), Jason Crow (D-CO), Robin Kelly (D-IL), Greg Landsman (D-OH) and Nancy Mace (R-SC).

At least two dozen lawmakers are eying upgrades, noted the outlet. The names above come in addition to others who've already indicated their interest in other offices, including Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL), Kevin Hern (R-OK) and Mike Lawler (R-NY), Andy Barr (R-KY), Buddy Carter (R-GA) and Clay Higgins (R-LA).
The House members are targeting races for governor and Senate.
The House GOP majority next year is expected to be extremely narrow. Republicans are projected to hold 219-221 seats, giving them a slim 1-3 seat majority.
