ASW Conversations: Thinking local at a global event, with J.F. Champagne

0

In his words, J.F. Champagne described AAPEX as a vibrant, relevant show that encapsulates what the automotive aftermarket.

From Joe’s Garage where technicians can see the latest in vehicle technology and how the aftermarket is responding to training sessions focused on everything from management to technical and then the more bigger picture items where industry and economic trends are mapped out.

But this is also a time for Champagne to come together with his international colleagues as they face a barrage of challenges, from right to repair to talent shortages.

But he also focused on the local challenges in Canada. There has been positive movement on right to repair, be it in Quebec or in relation to amendments to the Copyright Act. But a patchwork of regulation is untenable and there’s no standalone automotive inclusion for right to repair federally.

That will be a challenge so long as the OE and dealer networks continue with their strong lobbying efforts.

“We want to change that, making sure that we are included in getting that conversation going,” Champagne said on Auto Service World Conversations. “We’re not going to get legislation for right to repair the federal level in this government. We’ll all be looking forward to the next government, and [then] we’ll have another four-year window to really get this through.”

Tune in to listen to the whole conversation, which includes a discussion around electric vehicles, the rebranding of the national conference to the Canadian Auto Care Industry Conference and more.
