Glenn Maxwell challenges Yashasvi Jaiswal to ACHIEVE 40+ test hundreds after century at Perth
New Delhi: India took a commanding 1-0 lead in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-, defeating Australia by 295 runs at Optus Stadium. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brilliant 161 and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 100 helped India bounce back from a low score of 150, declaring their second innings at 487/6. Australia struggled in response, getting bowled out for 238, with Jasprit Bumrah starring with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 42 runs and earning the Player of the Match award. This victory marked India’s largest-ever margin of victory in Australia.
Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal’s adaptability to different conditions and his few weaknesses will enable the Indian opener to score more than 40 Test centuries and break several records.
Regarded as one of Indian cricket’s most promising young talents, the 22-year-old made an impressive debut in Test cricket and solidified his place with a remarkable performance against England earlier this year.
“Jaiswal is someone who will likely score more than 40 Test hundreds and set several new records. He has a great ability to adapt to various conditions,” Maxwell said on ‘The Grade Cricketer’ podcast.
In his debut Test match in Australia, Jaiswal made an unforgettable impact with a brilliant 161 in the second innings, helping India take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Jaiswal’s century in Perth marked his fourth in just 15 Tests, with each century surpassing 150 runs. He has accumulated 1,568 runs at an impressive average of 58.07. His resilience was on full display in Perth, bouncing back from a first-innings duck to produce a match-winning knock.
“He played a lot of shots that will be featured in highlight reels, but it’s the moments in between—leaving balls, playing behind them—that stand out. His footwork is sharp, he doesn’t have many weaknesses. He plays the short ball well, drives beautifully, handles spin superbly, and can absorb pressure over long periods.”
“It’s going to be scary if Australia can’t find a way to stop him over the next few games.”
Bumrah is on track to be remembered as one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time. Leading India to their most commanding victory in Australia in Rohit Sharma’s absence, Jasprit Bumrah further solidified his reputation as the world’s top bowler with a remarkable performance.
The stand-in captain led by example with an impressive match haul of 8/72 in the Perth Test, and Maxwell believes Bumrah could be remembered as “potentially the best fast bowler of all time.”
“They (India) have got two genuine generational talents at the peak of their powers which is Bumrah and Jaiswal,” Maxwell said.
“I have said this before, Bumrah is going to go down as potentially the best fast bowler of all time. Maybe not with the amount of wickets he takes in every format, but for the guys that have played against him, it is just so difficult.”
“He’s just got such unique action, unique ability with the ball to get it to move and rush you, he can beat you on the outside edge, inside edge and he’s got a quick sniff good slower ball, he seems like a complete package,” Maxwell added.
