Ange Postecoglou’s surprising Djed Spence decision

Djed Spence was the unfortunate player to miss out on Tottenham‘s Europa League squad as the club’s lack of homegrown and club-trained players meant that they could not name their full quota of players.

That decision did not go down well with some Spurs fans, especially since Spence had done well when opportunities had come his way.

Many questioned whether Postecoglou could have named the full-back in the squad in place of Fraser Forster. In this case, he would have had to rely upon the likes of Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman as backups.

Postecoglou decision at Spurs now vindicated

However, on Monday, Spurs confirmed that Guglielmo Vicario had fractured his ankle and had undergone surgery to fix the issue.

The Italian now faces an extended spell on the sidelines, which means that Forster will have to play an important part over the next couple of months.

Alasdair Gold, who was one of those to suggest that Spence could have been named in the Europa League squad over Forster, gave the following tongue-in-cheek response on social media.

Postecoglou was never going to leave out Fraser Forster

A manager of Postecoglou‘s experience would know just how important a backup goalkeeper is and he would have never entertained the thought of leaving Forster out to make room for Spence.

If the Australian had done that, one of Brandon Austin or Alfie Whiteman would have been thrust onto the big stage, which would have been far from ideal.

Of course, Vicario is still going to be a huge miss for Tottenham though, both in Europe and domestically. It will be interesting to see if Austin gets the nod over Forster against Roma now.
