Japhet Tanganga could not live up to early promise

When Japhet Tanganga first broke into the Tottenham starting eleven back in 2020 under Jose Mourinho, he looked like a star in the making.

The Spurs academy graduate played as a left-back on his debut and managed to keep Mohamed Salah quiet, showing all the attributes that one needs to succeed as a defender in the Premier League.

However, a series of injuries and managerial changes at Spurs meant that he never managed to get a consistent run in the side, with the defender eventually joining Millwall on loan before the start of the season after a successful loan spell at the club last campaign.

Japhet Tanganga opens up on decision to leave Spurs

The 25-year-old admits that he was emotional when the time came to say goodbye to the club where he had grown up. However, he acknowledged that the time was right for him to depart Hotspur Way in order to further his own career.

Tanganga told Sportsboom: “It was always going to be tough leaving Tottenham. It was my first club, I grew up there really. I was there from when I was nine until 25.

“It was always in my mind that I needed to go and further myself and my career. I needed to play football and that’s what I’ve got at Millwall.”

Tanganga thriving in the Championship

Tanganga’s decision to move to the Den has been vindicated, with the defender going from strength to strength at the South London club.

Millwall now looks set to compete for a playoff spot, mainly owing to their solid defence, with the former Tottenham man emerging as a leader at the back.

When asked about his success at the Championship outfit, the Spurs academy graduate said: “The experience I got from my time at Tottenham is great. It’s something I can use to my advantage, the information I’ve gathered from my time in the Premier League.

“The Championship is its own level itself and something you can’t underestimate. I’ve had to learn as well. As much as I’ve played in the Premier League, I’ve had to learn what the Championship is like. The boys who have been in this league for many years have really helped me with that.”
