17-year-old accused of stealing car, crashing it on I-90
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 17-year-old has been charged in connection to stealing a BMW and crashing it head-on into another car on I-90 on Monday morning, according to New York State Police.
Police said they tried to stop the teen on Route 33 just before 8 a.m. Monday for not wearing a seat belt and using a cell phone while driving. The teen, driving a 2016 BMW that had been reported stolen out of Amherst, took off.
The driver is accused of exiting at William Street going eastbound in the westbound lane and struck another car head-on. The teen then allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody. Police said the teen was in possession of the keys to the vehicle as well as stolen AirPods.
The driver in the other vehicle was not seriously injured.
The 17-year-old, who was not identified due to his age, was charged with the following:
- third-degree unlawful fleeing
- obstructing governmental administration
- third-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle
- third-degree criminal possession of stolen property
- resisting arrest
- second-degree reckless endangerment
- criminal possession of stolen property
- multiple vehicle and traffic infractions
The teen will be arraigned at Buffalo Family Court.
