Softball leaders Taeko Utsugi, Yutaka Miyake awarded with prestigious autumn honours in Japan
Former Japan Olympic head coach and WBSC Executive Board Member Taeko Utsugi, along with Japan Softball Association’s former President and current Softball Asia Advisor Yukata Miyake received the prestigious "Autumn 2024 Decorations" in Japan, bestowed upon individuals who have made outstanding contributions in various fields such as politics, arts, sports and culture.
Utsugi has been honoured with the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette” while Miyake has been awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays." These recognitions underscore the significant roles Utsugi and Miyake have played in the world of softball.
A former head coach of the Japan women’s national softball team, Utsugi has left an indelible mark on the sport. Her coaching prowess led Japan to medal wins at two consecutive Olympic Games, the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. Today, as a WBSC executive member, she continues to champion the cause of softball, demonstrating an unwavering commitment and dedication.
“I am overwhelmed with emotion and really honoured to receive this award in recognition of my over 60 years of softball career," Utsugi said. "I have had many wonderful encounters and experiences along the way. I will treasure the relationships I have built with athletes, coaches, fans, supporters, officials, and everyone involved in the sport. I will continue to work hard to promote and develop softball and convey the greatness of baseball and softball all over the world. This award is not just for me, but for everyone involved in our sports. I want to thank everyone who has walked this path with me.”
The Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875. The conferment of the decoration is a privilege of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to Japan's ties with foreign nations.
