Stock market today: Asian shares mostly fall on worries about Trump's tariffs

0
Asian shares have mostly declined as worries spread over President-elect Donald Trump's comment that he plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he takes office. Benchmarks slid in Japan, Australia and South Korea, but rose moderately in China. On Monday, stocks rose on Wall Street, led by shares in companies likely to benefit the most from lower interest rates and a stronger economy. The S&P 500 climbed 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1% to a new record. The Nasdaq also rose, getting a boost from easing Treasury yields after Trump said he wants hedge-fund manager Scott Bessent to be his Treasury Secretary.
