TOPEKA (KSNT) - Federal health officials say dog treats sold in numerous states are being recalled this week as they may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a press release on Saturday, Nov. 23 that 400 bags of dog treats from Carolina Prime Pet, Inc. based out of North Carolina are being recalled. The treats may be contaminated with salmonella which can cause harmful health impacts for dogs and people who come into contact with the food.

The FDA said the "Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips" were sent to stores in 19 states. These include Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, Mississippi and Michigan.

The recalled dog treats come in 16 oz bags which are purple and black in coloration. They bear lot number 20051324L2 and an expiration date of Nov. 13, 2025.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says on its website that salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps in people, sometimes even leading to more significant health issues such as infections in the blood, bones and joints. The FDA said pets infected with salmonella may appear lethargic or show signs of vomiting, fever and diarrhea.

The FDA said no salmonella infections have been reported yet in connection to this recall. People who bought one of the bags should stop using them and contact the company at treats@carolinaprimepet.com or 828-394-6460 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST Monday through Friday if they have any questions.
