Hays County woman sentenced following charge of pretending to be lawyer

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman in Hays County was sentenced Nov. 18 in connection with a charge for pretending to be an attorney licensed to practice law in Texas.

According to court documents, Nichole Elizabeth Humes was placed on deferred adjudication for five years after pleading guilty to a charge of “falsely holding oneself out as a lawyer.”

The third-degree felony charge was based on alleged misrepresentations in November 2022.

Court documents showed Humes must also pay a fine of $1,500 and perform 250 hours of community service related to the sentencing.

In Texas, deferred adjudication is a type of probation that allows the person sentenced to keep the conviction off their criminal record.
