Undulating Compact Home

0

Undulating Compact Home is a minimal apartment located in Hong Kong, designed by Adrian Chan of ADRO. Central to the 570 sqft redesign is an undulating wall, an architectural element that organizes the space while providing concealed storage. The design addresses the family’s concerns about clutter and aims to create a home that feels welcoming and functional for their new baby. The undulating wall serves a dual purpose. It acts as a spatial anchor, guiding movement through the apartment, while integrating essential functions, including a bathroom, storage, and mechanical systems. Its flowing, curvilinear form extends seamlessly from the kitchen to the bedroom, fostering a sense of cohesion.

To maximize functionality, ADRO employed innovative storage solutions that extend beyond traditional vertical cabinetry. Horizontal storage elements expose open wall space, creating a sense of openness in the small apartment. In the master bedroom, hydraulic hardware lifts the entire floor, revealing concealed storage for off-season clothing and valuables. Additional hidden storage is incorporated throughout, such as millwork in the corridor ceiling for dried goods and luggage, and multi-functional furniture, like a bedroom desk and living room bench, which transform with flip-up mechanisms.
