Tottenham’s win against Man City showed grit and personal sacrifice

The 4-0 scoreline in Tottenham’s win against Manchester City paints the picture of a comfortable win. The reality was anything but, as Spurs faced 23 shots and managed only 43% possession.

Spurs’ emphatic win required enormous sacrifice and resilience, pressing hard and putting their bodies on the line. Tottenham players blocked 7 shots across the match (3 of which were provided by the imperious Radu Dragusin) and worked hard until the final whistle, earning themselves their complimentary 4th goal.

Even when dropping deep to defend against a side with more possession, Tottenham play full throttle football. However, the physical demands of this approach may have claimed another victim with a key player leaving the match looking worse for wear.

Guglielmo Vicario may have picked up an injury

According to The Athletic’s Jay Harris on X, Guglielmo Vicario was visibly limping through the mixzone after full-time.

The Tottenham keeper was frequently called into action, making 5 vital saves and certainly contributing everything he could to Spurs’ clean sheet.

All potential injuries take a few days after a match to assess. The club and fans may have an anxious wait ahead of them before Vicario’s future availability becomes clear.

Vicario is the one injury Tottenham cannot afford

Each injury to a Tottenham player feels like the worst one yet, however, losing Vicario could spell disaster. No team operates as well without their number 1 goalkeeper, but losing Vicario’s ability at shot-stopping would be catastrophic.

Fraser Forster’s shot-stopping ability is incomparable and Spurs would likely concede far more goals than they currently are.

Tottenham may well have intended to rotate Vicario out for their next game against Roma in the Europa League anyway. Nevertheless, Tottenham might struggle to generate the consistency they are searching for if they are set to be without their number one for a longer period.
