Ange Postecoglou is a man under pressure

There is no getting away from the fact that pressure is starting to mount on Postecoglou, with the 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town being the result that caused some Spurs fans to run out of patience.

While there is no doubt that the majority of the fan base is still very much behind the Australian, the goodwill that he had built is now starting to run out, now that we are more than a quarter of the way into his second season in charge.

The 59-year-old has spoken about wanting to build a long-term project at N17, but he will be aware that he might not get a chance to do that if Tottenham do not find some consistency.

Postecoglou’s words could come back to haunt him

Postecoglou has not been shy of putting himself and the side under pressure by publicly declaring his trophy ambitions, even repeatedly pointing out that he always wins silverware in his second season at clubs (Sky Sports).

The Tottenham head coach also went as far as to assert that he would have failed this season if he does not guide the club to a trophy (BBC Sport).

Jacobs believes that while the Tottenham boss is not in any danger at the moment, his position will be under threat at the end of the season if Spurs do not win a trophy, given his comments.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “So I don’t think there’s a conversation yet about Postecoglou ending his Spurs tenure, because he’s backed and believed in by the hierarchy in this new project.

“But I do think if we get to the end of the season and Spurs underwhelm and don’t win anything, then people will be coming back to those Postecoglou comments, and saying ‘the manager explicitly said he always wins something in his second season’ – he hasn’t.

“Should that happen, and then in the summer of 2025, he will then be facing the need for something positive into next season – otherwise we may be having a more serious conversation about whether Spurs are moving in the right direction.”

Postecoglou will be given the rest of the season

Unless Tottenham struggle considerably and find themselves well adrift of the top six places, Postecoglou will be given the rest of the season to show what he can do.

The club have decided to bet on a long-term project by signing young players with a certain tactical profile, and it would make no sense to abandon this at the first sign of trouble.
