A former NFL player and White House official has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Scott Turner of Texas, who served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council, during Trump's first term, will take over the agency tasked with addressing housing needs, improving communities, and enforcing fair housing laws.

Turner helped lead an "Unprecedented Effort that Transformed our Country’s most distressed communities," Trump said.

"Those efforts, working together with former HUD Secretary, Ben Carson, were maximized by Scott’s guidance in overseeing 16 Federal Agencies which implemented more than 200 policy actions furthering Economic Development," he said. "Under Scott’s leadership, Opportunity Zones received over $50 Billion Dollars in Private Investment!"

Turner spent nine years in the NFL as a cornerback, playing for Washington, the then-San Diego Chargers, and the Denver Broncos. He also served as an offensive coordinator.

He was also elected to the Texas House of Representatives.
