The city's official Christmas tree lighting will take place on Friday in Millennium Park. The tradition has been going on for over 100 years in the city — here's what to know about this year's event.

When and where is this year’s Chicago Christmas tree lighting?

Chicago's 2024 Christmas tree lighting will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 22 in Millennium Park, near Michigan Avenue and Washington Street.

The preshow will begin at 5 p.m. and feature performances from DJ EvieTheCool, Zion Ali, Uniting Voices, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella at the Marriott Theatre, Rosalba Valdez, Teatro ZinZanni - Liv Warfield and Cunio accompanied by Theodis Rodgers on keys and Nate Martin & SIGN.

What are the street closures in the Loop for the Christmas tree lighting?

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony may affect commuters in the Loop. The following streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 22, according to the city:

  • Washington Street from Wabash Avenue to Michigan Avenue
  • Madison Street from Wabash Avenue to Michigan Avenue
  • Michigan Avenue from Randolph Street to Monroe Street
  • Garland Court from Randolph Street to Monroe Monroe Street

Where did this year’s Chicago Christmas tree come from?

The 54-foot blue spruce that will light up Chicago's downtown for the holiday season was plucked from the front yard of a Logan Square home on the 2500 block of North Kimball Avenue.

It was planted in 1976 when the home's previous owner, Jim Mulligan, moved into the home.
