Cormier Departs from San Diego Women’s Rowing

University of San Diego head women’s rowing coach David Cormier has made it public that he will be stepping down from his coaching position to explore other opportunities.

Cormier joined the Torero women’s rowing team in 2019 as an assistant coach and was named the team’s 11th head coach in program history in the fall of 2022. In 2023 and 2024, USD finished second in the WCC Championships.

“I have absolutely loved my time here at USD,” Cormier shared with the USD public. “It’s been a privilege spending the last five years working with the amazing members of this program and watching them grow as athletes, students, and, most importantly, people.”

With Cormier guiding the Toreros, the team won the Cal Cup at the 2023 San Diego Fall Classic for the first time since 2010. This past fall the team’s varsity four claimed a first-place finish at Head of the American Regatta and the club four finished fourth at the Head of the Charles.

“I am so proud of what our program has accomplished, and I feel that it is only the beginning of what this team is capable of,” Cormier said. “As I move on from coaching to pursue other career opportunities, I am looking forward to cheering the team on and celebrating all their future successes.”

As Cormier departs the team, associate head coach Mark Lewis will step into the role of interim head coach. Lewis joined the USD rowing staff as an assistant coach shortly after Cormier, in October 2022.

Prior to San Diego, Lewis coached on the East Coast with Hollis Brookline Cavaliers Crew and UMass Lowell. Lewis was a competitive rower before transitioning to coaching and brings with him a wealth of knowledge from over 15 years of international racing.
