China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that in an attack by armed assailants on Chinese workers near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border, one Chinese citizen was killed, and four others were injured.

The Chinese ambassador in Dushanbe urged Tajik authorities to “quickly clarify the cause of this incident.”

Local sources reported on Monday, November 18, that the incident occurred in the Zarboz Valley of the Shamsiddin Shohin district in Tajikistan’s Khatlon province.

In a statement sent to Agence France-Presse, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “On November 18, the headquarters of a private Chinese company in the border area of Tajikistan and Afghanistan was attacked, resulting in the death of one Chinese citizen and injuries to four others.”

The statement added, “China strongly condemns this violent attack and deeply regrets the death of its citizen and the injury of four others.”

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that a “working group” from the Chinese embassy in Dushanbe had been dispatched to the area to “express sympathy with the injured and coordinate necessary follow-up measures.”

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized, “Given the security situation in the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border area, Chinese citizens and companies in this region are reminded to pay special attention to their safety.”

Chinese companies, particularly those involved in the extraction of raw materials such as gold, have a significant presence in Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan.

This incident highlights the growing security challenges in the region, particularly for foreign companies operating in sensitive border areas. The attack underscores the need for enhanced cooperation between regional governments and international organizations to address threats posed by extremism and violence.

Given the region’s strategic importance and rich natural resources, ensuring the safety of workers and investments is critical. Coordinated efforts to improve security and foster stability are essential not only for the affected countries but also for broader regional peace and economic development.
