3 dead after car bypasses rail crossing gate, struck by locomotive in Harvey
Three people are dead after the driver of a car bypassed a train-crossing barrier and was struck by a freight train Wednesday afternoon in Harvey.
The driver of a car went around a lowered crossing gate near 152nd Street and Park Avenue in the south suburb about 12:30 p.m. and was hit by a CSX locomotive, the transportation company said in a statement.
The three occupants of the car, a man and two women, were killed in the crash, officials said. Their ages weren’t immediately released.
No one on the train was injured, CSX said.
“CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragedy, and we will work on scene to support local law enforcement as they continue to investigate,” the company said in a statement.
A Metra spokesperson said none of its trains were affected by the crash.
No other information was immediately available.
