On Wednesday, Benny Blanco, more popularly known as “Selena Gomez’s boyfriend,” claimed on YouTuber Kai Cenat’s stream that Gomez asked him out, not the other way around. They’d been friends for years when one day, she asked him to dinner; he didn’t even realize it was a date, so he says. This is surprising for reasons that should be fairly obvious. It’s also a bit tasteless. The situation evokes the whole debacle with Simone Biles’s husband, who now infamously alleged that he hadn’t known who the Olympic gymnast was when they met, arguing he was the “catch.” Look, if you’re going to ride on your girlfriend’s coattails, you must at every point speak about how amazing she is and how undeserving you are.
