New program offers relief to Alzheimer's caregivers
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Providing a safe space for those living with Alzheimer’s or dementia while offering their caregivers a moment of rest.
Every Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants living with moderate forms of Alzheimer’s or dementia visit the Renew, Refresh, Restore Respite Ministry at Scioto Ridge United Methodist Church.
Participants take part in activities that work not just their mind but also their bodies.
For the caregiver, it serves as a time of rest knowing their loved ones are safe.
“I can go to my office and not have to worry about anything other than my job and what I have going on,” April said.
April, the care partner for her husband Tom, said her active and outgoing husband was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's about a year and a half ago.
She said he looks forward to the program and it provides an outlet for his energy.
“I can tell he loves this place,” April said. "I come to pick him up and he just wants me to hang out more and talk with everybody.”
