AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officers arrested an 84-year-old man accused of murdering an 83-year-old woman and her dog in east Austin earlier this week, the Austin Police Department said in a news release Wednesday.

Police identified that man as Jack Moore, who was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder. He was booked into the Travis County Jail. Attorney information was not available via online court records. We will update this story if that changes.

APD will hold a press conference Thursday at 11 a.m. to provide information about the investigation.

Officers responded to the 6900 block of Bryn Mawr Drive around 1:45 p.m. Monday for a report of a dead person. When officers arrived at the home, they found a dead woman and a dead dog. The woman was identified by police Wednesday as Linda Mlsna.

The initial investigative revealed Mlsna's roommate, Moore, was not at the home, and "his whereabouts were unknown," the release said. Police later discovered Moore used Mlsna's credit cards and made "fraudulent purchases" after she died.

Moore was arrested on "an unrelated warrant" by APD's Tactical Intelligence Unit, as well as the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. When Moore was interviewed by detectives, he "confessed" to killing Mlsna and her dog, took her credit cards and then formulated "a plan to flee the country," according to police.

"No other subjects were determined to be involved and there is no further threat to the public," APD said in the release.

This is now being investigated as Austin's 63rd homicide of 2024, according to police.

Anyone who has any information on the case can contact APD at 512-974-TIPS, can submit an anonymous tip via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program website or can call 512-472-8477, according to police.
