Amsterdam police chief honored as he retires

AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Leaders in Amsterdam recognized the city's outgoing police chief for his decades of service to the community. A walkout ceremony was held on Tuesday for Chief John Thomas, who is retiring.

The common council presented him with a proclamation. He served in the department for 26 years and was named chief in 2020.

Lt. Joseph Spencer has been named interim chief.
