Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown believes that the North London club may not be opposed to cashing in on one first-team regular if they receive a big enough offer.

Key Tottenham player generating transfer interest

It has been widely reported since the summer transfer window that Cristian Romero has emerged as a target for Real Madrid.

The most concerning update on the matter came from GiveMeSporr on November 7, with the outlet claiming that the Argentine is not in a hurry to discuss a new deal with Spurs despite the fact that his current contract ends in 2026.

It was explained that he is resisting talks over an extension as he wants to see if Los Blancos come in with an offer for him next summer and would be prepared to push for a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Mick Brown’s surprising claim about Tottenham’s Romero stance

Mick Brown points out that Romero has made more than his fair share of mistakes this season and opines that the Spurs vice-captain is not at the same level as the elite centre-backs in world football.

He suggested that if Carlo Ancelotti’s men thus come in with a big offer next summer, Tottenham might consider cashing in on him and reinvesting the money into the squad.

When asked about the speculation over Romero’s future, the former Tottenham scout told Football Insider: “If the interest from Real Madrid is genuine, they’ve got a decision to make. There are some concerns about him at Tottenham because of their defensive issues.

“Now, there are a number of reasons for those issues and the blame isn’t solely on him, but as a big part of that defence, there are question marks about his performances.

“He’s also error-prone which is something the team can’t really afford to carry in their situation. If you look at teams like Arsenal and Man City, the top teams, their stability is built on players like William Saliba and Ruben Dias.

“These are players that you know, in the heart of your defence, you can rely on. Is Romero that sort of player for Tottenham? Not for me.

“So I think they could look at think, if we can get big money, we’ll take it and reinvest in a player who might provide that stability. It might not be worth the risk of destabilising the back line unless it’s big money though, it needs to be enough to reinvest properly.”

Tottenham facing a tricky situation with Romero

There is no doubt that Spurs will do everything in their power to tie Romero down to a new contract, given his attributes as a centre-back as well as his leadership qualities.

However, should the Argentina international decide not to extend his deal, the Lilywhites mighty have to cash in on him next summer rather than risking losing him on a free in 2026.

Romero’s decision on whether to extend his stay might come down to whether Spurs manage to compete for trophies this season.
