Statewide drought watch in effect for New York
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A statewide drought watch has been declared as of Monday, November 18. Several counties in the Capital Region and beyond have also been placed under a drought warning.
The drought watch and warnings were put into effect due to the continued shortage of rainfall in the state. However, some substantial rain in the forecast later this week will hopefully provide relief.
In New York, 15 counties were put under a drought warning, which requires state agencies to implement water-saving measures without imposing restrictions on the public. This is one step before a drought emergency, which would force New Yorkers to conserve water.
Counties under a drought warning
- Bronx County
- Delaware County
- Dutchess County
- Greene County
- Kings County
- New York County
- Orange County
- Putnam County
- Queens County
- Richmond County
- Rockland County
- Schoharie County
- Sullivan County
- Ulster County
- Westchester County
Those in the affected counties, especially those with groundwater-dependent wells, are encouraged to conserve water whenever possible. The state provided the following tips for voluntarily reducing water usage:
- Reuse water collected in rain barrels, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners to water plants.
- Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks.
- Fix leaking pipes, fixtures, toilets, hoses and faucets.
- Wash only full loads of dishes and laundry.
- Take shorter showers or fill the bathtub partly.
- Install water-saving plumbing fixtures.
- Don’t run the tap to make the water hot or cold.
- Wash cars less frequently.
Drought conditions have also caused an increased wildfire risk. The Hudson Valley and Long Island fire danger are at very high risk, the Catskill, Upper Hudson Valley, St. Lawrence, and Leatherstocking areas are at high risk, and the Adirondack, High Peaks, Lake Ontario, and Southern Tier are at moderate risk.
