Topeka women fight cat overpopulation with new charity effort
TOPEKA (KSNT) - A Topeka non-profit focused on helping local cats find loving homes is celebrating one year of pursuing its mission in the community.
Team Kitten started in November 2023, helps combat the overpopulation of cats in the Topeka area and surrounding counties. Co-founder of the organization, Alex Ewy, told 27 News the non-profit has taken in nearly 650 cats and kittens since it was formed.
"We were founded primarily in Shawnee County/Topeka knowing there was a need in this community," Ewy said.
Ewy said Team Kitten has funded around 480 spay/neuter surgeries and helped facilitate 350 adoptions. Volunteers with Team Kitten also work closely with the Topeka Cat Café which opened in July 2024 to help speed up adoptions in the community. The café recently celebrated helping 100 cats get adopted into local homes.
"Part of the reason we've been able to help so many is because of the Cat Café," Ewy said.
Team Kitten primarily works to help kittens and rehabilitate them, partnering with multiple local foster homes to help accomplish their mission. The organization's founders are a group of women who want to improve the quality of life for cats in the community and keep the overall population in check.
“We credit the incredible support of our partnerships and our volunteers, including our talented foster families, for such an impactful first year,” said Melissa Sewell, executive director of Team Kitten. “We look forward to continuing to serve our community and its felines in 2025.”
You can find the Topeka Cat Café at 400 Southwest 29th Street. Learn more about Team Kitten's work in the community and the services it offers by clicking here.
