Woman dies after gun fired from nearby north Austin apartment
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police said a woman died at a north Austin apartment complex after she was shot by a gun fired from a neighboring apartment.
Police responded to the 1900 block of Rutland Drive around 4 a.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting. Officers found the woman, who was not identified by police, on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound, APD said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:37 a.m., police said.
Detectives believe the gun was fired from the apartment next door. Officers detained Noah Mata, 36, in connection with the shooting, police said. Police believe Mata was trying to take the gun from another man in the neighboring apartment when the gun fired, the release said.
Police said Mata was a resident at the complex.
Mata was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. He was booked into Travis County Jail, APD said.
Attorney information for Mata wasn't available as of Monday morning. KXAN will reach out for a statement on the accusations if that information becomes available.
